Grass track cycle racing has been a feature of Heckington Show for many years and Heckington boasts possibly the oldest grass track cycling event in the country, if not the world.

It usually attracts most of the UK's top riders who travel to Lincolnshire from far and wide.  There are normally five races, ranging from the fast and furious 500 metre handicap event, where the riders battle through heats to reach the final, to the gruelling long distance 8 km (five mile) event which requires the contestants to complete 26 laps of the track.

It is a spectacular sight to see the 20 or so riders in a compact bunch riding round the unique track which makes Heckington Show such a popular venue.  The bends are tight and the track is narrow.  The crowds are enthusiastic and knowledgeable.  They give the riders lots of encouragement and help to create a very competitive atmosphere.

Senior Cycling

Those of you who were here in 2008, will have witnessed the elation when Neil Withington won his first National Title at the Showground.  Neil came down from Carlisle and went home with the National 800 metres title.  His name will be added to the list of previous winners engraved on the prestigious Rose Newton Trophy.

Great News for Youth Cycling

For the first time ever last year, there was an inter-club championship for Lincolnshire clubs registered as Go-ride clubs with British Cycling. We had three local clubs from Sleaford, Spalding and Grantham. Kindly sponsored by HSBC, the teams of 6 riders competed in 7 events, scoring points in each event. Come along again this year and support your local team. There may be a future Chris Hoy or Vicky Pendleton out there - and you could see them first at Heckington
